Careful Mowing Begins Around Weather

Spring is near, as the sunny, warm Friday and Saturday teased. However, we still have cold, wet weather forecasted for March and beyond. We are beginning to start our mowing and will do our best to get properties mowed without causing damage from the saturated soil conditions. We want to avoid the damage pictured below with mower wheel ruts. Wet grass is also quite difficult to mow and bag. We are monitoring conditions and will work around the weather to mow when we can, but this is shaping up to be a very challenging start to the mowing season.

Lawn damage from wet mowing

Spring Weather Challenges

  • Cold Delays Growth: The cold weather has delayed normal spring grass growth
  • Wet Conditions: Extended cold and wet weather forecasted for March
  • Soil Saturation: Saturated soil is easily damaged by heavy equipment
  • Delayed Winter Work: February's cold, snowy, and icy conditions delayed some normal winter preparation

Our Mowing Approach

  • Timing: Mowing only when conditions allow to prevent damage
  • Careful Monitoring: Regularly assessing soil moisture conditions
  • Priority Balance: Finishing winter pruning and bed preparation when too wet to mow
  • Patient Approach: Working around weather patterns to ensure quality service

If there is any consolation, the cold weather has delayed normal spring grass growth, so the need to mow is less than in a typical year. The cold, snowy, and icy conditions in February did delay our normal winter work to prepare for spring, but luckily we were ahead of schedule due to the dry January. Additionally, the reduced pressure to mow has allowed us to finish up winter pruning and shrub bed preparation for the coming spring.

Ah, what about spring? The equinox is in three weeks, but the forecast calls for extended cold and wet weather. Yes, last Friday and Saturday were teases—real spring won't be here for a while.
